Save our Bus Public Meeting
In a packed hall last night Romsey commuters, students, politicians and residents heard South West Trains and Stagecoach outline their justification for the planned cancellation of the Rail Link Bus between Romsey and Winchester.
However, the good news was that the peak time commuter buses have been given a stay of execution until July 2008, during which time Hampshire County Council are to conduct extensive passenger surveys. But the message was very clear - use them or lose them.
There was support for a working group, to investigate how best to proceed, from across the political spectrum, and many local councillors were in attendance to offer their support.
Member of the panel Cllr Caroline Nokes said:
"This was a very productive meeting and I want to express my thanks to Nadine Taylor and Matt O'Connor for the energy they have invested in this campaign.
"There is cross party and cross authority support for this bus service, and I think it is important that we focus on how we can work together to ensure that the Rail Link bus remains beyone next July.
"Hampshire County Councll asked the Government to include the expansion of Rail Link in the franchise, but it seems Government thought it knew better. For areas like Romsey we need to have a bit of joined up thinking in order to achieve a real integrated solution."
