SEERA CONCLUSIONS FOR ROMSEY MAKE A WELCOME CHANGE
Caroline Nokes, the Borough Councillor for Romsey Extra and Romsey's Conservative Candidate for the general election has welcomed the conclusions of a report just released by the South East England Regional Assembly, which indicates there should not be an increase on the current proposed house building numbers in Southern Test Valley.
The report on the Draft South East Plan has generally recommended an increase in overall levels of house building in the South East by 10% up to 2026, but whilst Fareham and Eastleigh have both been identified for Strategic Development Areas, it has not been suggested that the area around Romsey should take any additional housing above the numbers that have already been proposed. In the North of Test Valley a demand for a further 600 houses has been made, in response to the demographic and economic factors, and these will be concentrated around Andover.
Caroline Nokes said:

"The Romsey area, and the other settlements in Southern Test Valley are already under immense pressure from housing requirements, so it is a welcome change to hear that the proposed numbers are not to be increased.
"I have real fears that the Labour Government has no recognition of the need to retain gaps between settlements, our precious green areas and the quality of life we enjoy. But I really welcome the response from SEERA that there should be no further increase to the housing numbers in Southern Test Valley. This does not mean that we do not still need to be vigilant, but the prospect of a whole new settlement between Romsey and Southampton has receded, which is a great relief. In contrast it has been confirmed that Eastleigh is to get a whole new development area.
"This outcome is a victory for Test Valley's planning policies and comes after years of hard work putting forward the important case that Southern Test Valley needs protecting from encroaching urbanisation and the merging of our towns and villages."
